MIAA Middle School Girls Soccer Championship

Congratulations to the Cordova Middle Lady Cougars on capturing their second consecutive city championship title by defeating the formidable White Station Lady Spartans on Saturday, October 15th. It was an incredible battle between the long-time rivals but in the end Cordova prevailed after the 7th penalty kick of the amazing  and epic contest.  White Station opened the scoring in the first half with a blast from 20 yards out but Cordova tied the game late in the second half on 7th grader Taylor Williams’ 21st goal of the season. The Lady Spartans also scored after a penalty box skirmish  in the first half of the extra time. Cordova perservered to tie the game at 2-2 with about 5 minutes remaining on a looping, wishful shot by Samantha Stemmer that barely escaped the reach of the visibly dejected White Station goalie. It had come down to heart-wrenching penalty kicks to decide the championship between the two teams that had won each of the last 7 or more MIAA Middle School Girls Soccer Championships. The emotion displayed by both teams during the penalty kick shootout was more than most could bear to watch. After just 2 kicks for each team, and with another tie situation, most of the girls for both teams began crying and hardly managing to keep it together. After 4 kicks per team, it was tied again and Cordova missed their 5th to open the Championship door for White Station. Their best offensive player stepped to the penalty spot sobbing and distraught under the immense pressure. It was hard to watch for fans and players of both teams. Unfortunately for the notoriously powerful White Station team, she was unable to get the ball past 2011 MIAA Outstanding Player Madison Smith. Now on to extra kicks. The energy and emotion was now at the point of combustion for all involved. Cordova missed first granting White Station another chance at victory but the gritty Cordova goalie pushed a powerful shot over the top of the crossbar to extend the marathon of misery to a 7th penalty kick. Seventh grader Kirsten Todd, whose sister plays JV soccer for White Station, calmly strode to her destiny. After telling the goalie to “watch out” because her “aim wasn’t very good,” the diminunative Todd blasted a rocket into the back of the net. Cordova players and fans tried to control their eruption know that White Station could still tie the match again. With tears streaming down the faces of players, parents, coaches and fans, White Station’s last hope (for the moment) prepared to attempt to continue the incredible saga. However, the shot tracked directly into the gut of the Cordova goalie. At that second, the separation between Cordova’s jubilation and White Station’s anguish was truly worlds apart. However, the defining line between victory and defeat has seldom been so unrecognizably identical. Anyone in attendance was heartsick from a rollercoaster ride of emotions that left everyone gasping and trying to process what they had just witnessed. The White Station girls were inconsolable th0ugh proud of how hard they’d battled and how well they’d performed versus the favored and defending champion Lady Cougars. The Cordova contingency went haywire, still halfway crying while trying to be happy over the victorious end to a soccer marathon. Congratulations to both teams and coaches as certainly neither deserved to lose such a monumental struggle of the physical and emotional limits of 12, 13, and 14 year old girls playing a game they love. Pure sport was defined on many realms this day when the resilient Lady Cougars of Cordova outlasted the valiant Lady Spartans of White Station to capture their 2nd straight city championship on an unforgettable day in October.
